Rev 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
Rev 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
Rev 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Rev 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
Rev 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Rev 3:6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (KJV)

Christ introduces Himself as the God of the seven churches (lampstands) and of the circuit of the reference (the angel). He acknowledges that the angel himself has works yet to go, as being "more than the first" but the angel has somewhat stalled in his circuit of the churches (himself having a name as those same seven stars in circuit, but appears not convicted to do so, as if spiritually asleep or "dead".) (verse 3:1.)

The angel has left his church and has not overcome the false doctirne he has, his state is precarious as to whether his faith is strong enough to survive alone. (There are examples of some few who have not returned and defiled their robes with the image system.)

Jesus has instructed his angel not to move on until he has completed his overcoming of the same false doctrines and the faulty state of his further (but now ended) fellowship. Now exeunt of the church, he is to examine their state (to be watchful) and store up for himself all that remains of his own sound doctrine and those other things "ready to die" (verse 3:2) of his future works to come (his purpose), that are yet to be completed (made perfect) both in this "church" and also to come in the circuit (as in Philadelphia). As before God's gaze, the angel has not overcome this particular church of the seven and has "stalled" in overcoming it's own false doctrine. He has thus stalled because of his relationships to those with which he was previously in fellowship. They have nothing "new" to teach him (as for the sake of his circuit), other than that they, like him are likewise asleep ("dead") though also called by one whose name is "life".

It is possible that the angel was the only believer "awake" to Satan's devices in his whole fellowship, and is then in the position where he has no true "brethren" known to him to minister thereto, and that his own doctrine will have no affect on any in that church. (Any attempt to be made will fall on deaf ears.)

Then Christ states to His angel to remember those same things which he knew before, and to correct himself - then to complete this act of repentance before moving on once more to approval. He is to observe in his fellowship their false doctrines - perhaps he was not in attendance of any of their facilitated meetings as under the "Jezebel" spirit and image system from Thyatira. I assume he is now exueunt of that same fellowship (and is still spiritually asleep).

He is to hold firmly to his own sound conviction and repent carefully his fellowship - to continue to leave his church (beyond not attending) and to finally find grace under Christ's approval. Without watching as instructed, the angel would not know the hour of his Lord's coming. (He would not otherwise be in that one place of twenty four (as an elder) or as truly elect.) He would be as a "foolish virgin" lost to the doctrines of those that "buy or sell" as in the Laodicean amagam that is the scarlet beast.

Instead, He is encouraged - that there are other individuals (rather than fellowships) elect that are not tied to the beast of MYSTERY BABYLON and it's image system. He is rewarded with the ability to further tread the winepress. He is elect, and found in approval before every ministering spirit of God, but most importantly, God Himself. (He is recognised as Holy in heaven before the Father.)
